The regular season of the PGA Tour comes to a close at the Tour Championship this week, which is also the culmination of the FedEx Cup playoffs – the winner takes home a cool $10 million – but who is the most likely to win the prize?
Mathematically all 30 players in the field have a chance of winning the FedEx Cup by winning the Tour Championship event, but it'll take an opus to discuss every permutation, so we'll just focus on the top five.
No 1 Webb Simpson
This year has been a breakthrough season on the PGA Tour for Simpson and the 26-year-old goes into the Tour Championship on top of the FedEx Cup standings after a storming end to the season.
Simpson picked up his first career win when he won the Wyndham Classic the week before the playoffs began. He took that form and ran with it claiming 10th in the Barclays before winning the Deutsche Bank Championship and claiming another top five in the BMW Championship.
No 2 Dustin Johnson
Even though Johnson is going into the Tour Championship second in the FedEx Cup standings he seems the least likely to make an impact. Johnson has had a poor year by his standards and his win in the Barclays (and the fact that playoff events are worth five times as many FedEx Cup points) is the only reason that he sits in the lofty position that he does.
Poor finishes in the Deutsche Bank and BMW Championships only serve to prove that the Barclays was perhaps an anomaly rather than a turn in form.
No 3 Justin Rose
After enjoying the best season of his PGA Tour career in 2010, this year has been a bit of a disappointment for Rose. He nearly didn’t qualify for the Tour Championship after he started the BMW Championship 34th on the FedEx Cup standings. His win in the BMW has put him right back into contention and, despite not being tipped by many at the beginning of the playoffs, goes into the Tour Championship as one of the form golfers in the field.
No 4 Luke Donald
Donald is without question the most consistent golfer in the world, and it is that consistency that has helped him become the No 1 ranked golfer in the world, despite having not won a Major title yet. He has recorded 12 top-10 finishes in 17 starts on the PGA Tour this year and is leading the European Tour’s order of merit.
He finished in the top five in both the BMW and Deutsche Bank Championships, and came second in this event last year on a course he clearly enjoys playing. Donald is the golfer to beat this week, and if the FedEx Cup is going to someone who doesn’t win the Tour Championship, odds are it’ll be Luke Donald.
No 5 Matt Kuchar
Solid is a good word to describe Kuchar, not flashy or flamboyant, just solid. He has 36 top-25 finishes in 47 starts over the last two years and has only missed four cuts. Kuchar hasn't managed a win on tour this year, but heads into the Tour Championship fifth in the FedEx Cup standings thanks to a second-place finish in the Barclays and solid golf throughout the year.
Kuchar is going to have to up his game this week though because solid won’t be enough, mostly because the king of solid golf (Donald) is ahead of him on this list.
Who is your pick to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup? It doesn’t have to be one of the five listed here.
